The American Society of Appraisers awarded its 2021–2022 Appraiser of the Year recognition to Jack Young, CPA, ASA Machinery and Equipment and Appraisal Review, and Carol Akers Klug, MBA, ASA Business Valuation. ASA International President David Crick presented the awards at the Association’s 2021 International Conference in Las Vegas.
Each year, this award recognizes two designated members who have influenced the profession through involvement in appraisal education courses, service on professional appraisal boards, and community involvement or activities. Nominated by their peers, affirmed by clients and colleagues, these appraisers exemplify outstanding professionalism and excellence within the appraisal profession.
“It’s a huge professional honor to be recognized by the American Society of Appraisers as the 2021 Appraiser of the Year,” Jack responded upon receiving the award. “The truth is that I’m standing on the shoulders of giants who showed me that I’ll always get out more of the ASA than I put in, and that has been my experience. I’m especially grateful to my dear departed friend Bob Podwalny, FASA, who went far out of his way to encourage me when things weren’t very encouraging. Also, many thanks to those who nominated me and the ASA Nominating and Awards Committee for selecting me. I’m very humbled and encouraged that the best days of the ASA are ahead of us.”
At the conference, Jack continued his involvement by presenting with two other accredited appraisal reviewers: Mark Penny, FASA in Business Valuation, and Melanie Modica, ASA in Personal Property, Fine Arts.
Mark, a former ASA president who now serves as Chair of the ARM Committee, said that one of Jack’s biggest contributions to ASA has been in appraisal review:
“Once Bob Podwalny got Jack involved, the program really took off. He’s been instrumental in collecting sources for the curriculum, rewriting, and teaching the classes, and writing articles for non-ASA publications. Jack’s idea of moving the curriculum to learner-centered, where participants learn to competently write reviews, instead of the teacher-centered theory lecture model revitalized the ARM accreditation process. We now have a very active ARM committee with some wonderful, dedicated volunteers.”
“Some of the long-term appraisers who’ve been practicing review for a long time are really excited to have it back in focus. Other appraisers, who hadn’t thought about appraisal review before, are interested in how review accreditation can expand their practice or help them become better appraisers. I don’t think we would be seeing the growth in ARM membership if it weren’t for Jack’s initial efforts.”
In addition to his direct involvement in machine and appraisal review, Jack recently helped coordinate the publication of an appraisal review article by Chad Pomeroy, St. Mary’s University School of Law, that is available on LexisNexis. Jack is a past president of the northern California chapter of the American Society of Appraisers, past chair of the ASA International Appraisal Review and Management Committee, currently serves on the ASA NorCal Chapter Board, is the editor of the Appraisal Review E-Journal, and serves on the ASA Board of Examiners.
Jack co-wrote and taught many of the core appraisal review and management accreditation classes and the machinery and equipment report writing class currently being offered by the ASA; he continues to develop and teach appraisal review and other classes for ASA. He is a contributor to the 4th edition of Valuing Machinery & Equipment: The Fundamentals of Appraising Machinery & Technical Assets (2020), is a frequent contributor to the ASA M&E Journal, and addressed the California Board of Equalization on the valuation of wine tanks as an invited participant in a panel discussion: Assessment of Personal Property & Fixtures: Ensuring Accurate & Consistent Valuations & Application Methods. His publications in legal and appraisal publications, including a translation in the China Valuer and a recent article on appraisal review for attorneys in the ACFLS Family Law Specialist, can be found at the Publication page of the NorCal Valuation website.
