I was first introduced to Mr. Leslie H. Miles, FASA, FAPI, CEA, as the calm, professional voice thoroughly expounding details of equipment appraisal on the introductory 12-CD equipment appraisal seminar I received from the American Society of Appraisers. It was only later that I had the pleasure of meeting him in person at an equipment appraisal seminar in San Francisco. Even without knowing his background, which is impressive, one can’t help but be charmed by Les and impressed with his knowledge of and dedication to the equipment appraisal field and ASA MTS in particular. So when I had a chance as a member of NorCal ASA to put together an educational seminar taught by Mr. Miles, I jumped right in.
The ME 207 seminar we’re hosting June 16 – 18 in San Francisco is exciting for a number of reasons. One, of course, is that any time we can attend Equipment Appraisal educational seminars here on the West Coast, it’s a bonus. Another is that the subject of Advanced Cost Approach—while important & useful for any equipment appraiser who’s interested in expanding a base of knowledge and providing increased services to clients—is not often offered by the ASA. ME 207 covers applications within various concepts of value; deriving numbers for and understanding terms such as excess capital or excess operating costs, exponents, physical deterioration, functional and economic obsolescence; use and development of effective age and age-life calculations. This is a 3-day seminar with an optional 3-hr exam on Saturday afternoon for academic course credit.
Obviously important to appraisers, this course is also useful to accountants for understanding appraisal applications; attorneys questioning expert witnesses who speak to such use of the cost approach; tax consultants & taxing authorities needing to make applications for presentations to the various taxing authorities or considering whether hiring an appraiser is worthwhile; bankers and asset-based lenders assessing outside appraisers; and anyone needing to contract appraisals or make their own value estimates.
So here we have an important and infrequently taught subject (ME 207, Advanced Cost Approach), on the West Coast, taught by Les Miles, a leading light in the Equipment Appraisal world and a great guy as well! He’s also a former auctioneer, which I especially appreciate, having been in the auction business myself for quite awhile.
If you’re interested in attending this seminar with Les Miles and haven’t registered yet, please do so now by clicking here or on any of the other ME207 links in this post! I’ll look forward to learning with you there.
